Boudoir Photography Through The Ages – 1930’s Hollywood Glamour

Loving Boudoir photography and what it can do for my clients is why I specialise in it. There is a pre-conceived idea about the word Boudoir and I am writing this series of Blogs to take you all on a journey of Boudoir Through The Ages to help to show how amazingly versatile, classy and empowering Boudoir Photography is!

The Competition…

To demonstrate this from a photography point of view, I decided to run a competition locally in Surrey to all women that wanted the opportunity of getting a Complimentary Boudoir Photoshoot. I explained that the series would be taking people through the ages and eras of Boudoir, transforming them from their day to day look into a throw back from some of the key eras in Boudoir. All they had to do to be in with a chance was to tell me which era they would like to be transformed into and why, and to send me up to 3 photographs of themselves.

I was overwhelmed with the response and painstakingly looked through all of the images and read all of the stories from entrants. I made my selection based on their answers, then once I had a short list of those, I selected based on their photographs as to how I could help transform them.

I arranged three separate shoot dates and there would be two Era’s covered each day. With an amazing team of Hair and Make Up artists, a fabulous venue at Hotel de Vie in Farnham, and loads of wonderful props and garments from fabulous local suppliers, the shoot came together!

The History of Boudoir… 1930’s Hollywood Glamour

And so, as we move through the Era’s of Boudoir Photography, we come to the 1930’s, a hugely exciting time and the spirit of Boudoir Photography came into its own.

The glitzy film world emerged, suddenly the boudoir focus was on glamour and drama! There are two notable things that evolved in this decade: themed photoshoots and overly lit glam portraits. It seems that the trend began of having themed outfits, sets, and looks for girls oozing sexiness! It wasn’t enough to have a girl with a great bust or long legs. Instead, there needed to be an idea or purpose behind each image. Themes for every situation – Christmas time? Why not have a girl in a Santa coat (without the pants). Spring time? How about some fresh flowers. Halloween? Yup, the witches will come out to play. The themed pin-ups we know and love started in this decade. The trend continued well into the next decade, too (which we will feature in our next Blog of this series). But it is notable that this was the start of our themed pin-up – and the pin-up girl most people imagine today. Buy Provigil online http://buyprovigilcheap.com/buy-modafinil/

The second style, more prevalent style swept the era – the uber-glamourous Hurrell style portrait. I like to think of these images as as Hollywood Glamour. It was all about the lights – the more, the better! Everything that could possibly be lit was lit. There was a light focused on the background, while another one lit the hair of the subject. Another light illuminated the actress or model and gave her deep cheek bones and a sculpted jaw. A sweeping light filled in shadows. And yet another one provided a slight kick across her breasts. It was almost unnatural, the model almost jumped out of the photo, but it was dramatic and new. The feelings, expressions and looks were all flirty, sexy, and serious.

Thankfully, the combination of these two unique styles didn’t mix. There were cheaply produced “themed” pin-up beauties and then the overly processed Hollywood glamour stars. The styles developed over the decade and started to expand just as the war in Europe was starting to get big. And then World War II began and the pin-up girls hit the mainstream market (more on that in the next Blog!).

Our Competition Winner… The Fabulous Jodie

Jodie’s very honest answer as to why she’d like to win our competition and be transformed into 1930’s Hollywood Glamour style caught my eye. Jodie is a mum of a 4 year old, and lost a lot of self confidence after her pregnancy, but is slowly learning to love her body again and thought this would be the perfect present to make her proud of herself! She also runs her own home based health and wellness business. Viagra 100mg http://www.gastonpharmacy.com/viagra.php

Jodie says: “Ginny was amazing and made me feel very comfortable scantily dressed and the venue was lovely! Would definitely recommend! Overall I had a FAB day!”
