When You’re Moving Through a Dark Night of the Soul (and Wondering If You’ll Ever Feel Like “You” Again)
If you’ve been feeling lost, disconnected, overwhelmed, or like life’s shaken everything you thought you knew about yourself… this blog is here to help.
I’m sharing my own experience of going through what’s often called a “dark night of the soul” — those intense periods of inner change that can feel unsettling and exhausting — and offering a few grounded steps to help you navigate your way through it.
By the end, you’ll have a better understanding of what you’re experiencing and some gentle, practical ways to support yourself as you move forward.
What on earth is a “Dark night of the soul” anyway?
Despite the dramatic name, a dark night of the soul isn’t about doom, gloom or anything mystical in a scary way.
It’s more like an emotional, spiritual and energetic growth spurt — but one that tends to come wrapped in confusion, fatigue, self-doubt, and a sense that the old version of you no longer fits.
For many people, it feels like:
- Burnout at the deepest level — not just tiredness, but “I don’t know who I am when I stop”
- An identity wobble — where roles, relationships or parts of your life stop making sense
- Feeling disconnected from yourself — as if the spark, confidence or ease you used to have has gone quiet
- A sudden awareness of what no longer feels aligned — even if you don’t yet know what does
- An inner shift you can’t put into words — just a knowing that something in you is changing
It’s uncomfortable, confronting, and at times deeply emotional.
But it’s also incredibly normal.
Many people go through it during major life transitions, periods of healing, or after years of being strong for everyone else.
And although it feels like falling apart, it’s actually a deep inner reorganisation — a clearing out, a recalibration — making space for a more authentic, grounded and powerful version of you to emerge.
My own dark night (a.k.a. That Time My Soul Hit the Emergency Brake)
For me, it often starts subtly, with a sense of exhaustion and “something’s off.” A bit of fogginess. A bit of resistance. A bit of emotional turbulence that I think I can out-yoga or out-journal… until it hits that point where my body, my nervous system, and life itself say:
“Nope. If you don’t sit down, lovely, I’m going to have to force you to stop. We need to talk.”
Suddenly:
Nothing feels aligned anymore.
I question everything — my purpose, my identity, the direction of my work, even my relationships.
My confidence dips, my energy tanks, and I feel like I’m moving through treacle.
And to top it off, I start comparing myself to the old “me” who could do everything effortlessly… and wondering where the hell she’s gone.
And here’s the kicker:
That version isn’t coming back — because life is nudging me (okay, sometimes shoving me) into a new version of myself.
Dark nights of the soul often crack us open in ways we’d never choose… but they reveal truths, strengths, and desires we’ve been avoiding, ignoring, or too scared to honour.
If you’re going through this… it’s not because you’ve done anything wrong
You’re most likely:
- Burnt out from holding everything together for too long
- Exhausted from trying to be strong, capable, or “fine”
- Disconnected from your body or intuition
- Questioning old identities that just don’t fit anymore
- Ready for change… but terrified of rocking the boat
- Sick of feeling stuck, but also overwhelmed by the idea of doing anything about it
And underneath all the confusion and frustration, there’s this quiet whisper:
“I want to feel like me again.
I want to feel confident, connected, alive, and in my power.”
If you’re going through this, you’re not doing anything wrong.
You might feel stuck, lost, frustrated, or like you’re not coping — but a dark night of the soul isn’t a failure.
It’s a transition.
A releasing of old identities, patterns, expectations and ways of being that you’ve outgrown.
It often happens when you’re finally ready, at a deeper level, to stop abandoning yourself and start listening to what you truly need.
What helped me through my dark night of the soul (and what might help you too):
1. Stop trying to “push through”
The dark night is not something you can out-hustle.
This is spiritual winter.
You are allowed — and actually required — to slow the f**k down.
If you need to keep earning, maybe (hear me out here) quit your job/put a pause on your business and get a more simple job to keep the income coming in but in a way that feels easier. You haven’t failed, this is just temporary.
2. Let your body lead
Whether it’s dance, rest, crying, walks, breathwork, yoga, or just lying on the floor having a moment (highly recommend), your body knows what it needs before your mind catches up.
Get rid of the “should”‘s. If you catch yourself saying “I should go for a walk”, question that and ask your gut – do I actually want to right now?
3. Get curious about what’s asking to change
(I recommend getting your journal out for this and writing whatever comes out)
Not in a “fix yourself” way.
More in a gentle:
“What feels heavy? What feels outdated? Where have I been abandoning myself?”
Sometimes the truth is less dramatic than we fear.
Sometimes it’s simply:
“I’m tired of pretending.”
“I’m tired of being the strong one.”
“I’m tired of shrinking.”
“I’m tired of doubting myself.”
4. Reach for connection — not isolation
You don’t have to navigate this alone.
Transformation happens faster (and more gently) when you have someone holding space for you, reflecting your power back to you, and helping you reconnect with your truth.
5. Remember: this is a doorway, not a dead-end
Even if it doesn’t feel like it yet, this period is preparing you for something more aligned, more authentic, more empowering.
Most people come out the other side with stronger boundaries, deeper self-awareness, and a clearer sense of who they are.
How I can help you further…
Supporting people through these turning points — through the mess and the magic — is the heart of my work.
Whether we go deep through coaching, move energy through embodiment, or capture your transformation through photography… my mission is always the same:
- To help you come home to yourself.
- To help you feel confident and powerful again.
- To help you reconnect with the version of you that you know is still in there, waiting to rise.
If you’re feeling the pull to explore this, or you’re craving support, clarity, or a space to reconnect with you again…
Drop me a message.
Ask me about what I can offer to help.
Let’s start a conversation and see what support would be right for where you’re at — whether that’s now, in six months, or in a year’s time.
You’re not meant to do this alone.
And you’re not meant to stay stuck.
Your next chapter is calling — and you’re closer to it than you think.
