And now for the next blog in our ‘Boudoir Through the Ages’ series – 50’s Pin Up!

Loving Boudoir photography and what it can do for my clients is why I specialise in it. There is a pre-conceived idea about the word Boudoir and I am writing this series of Blogs to take you all on a journey of Boudoir Through The Ages to help to show how amazingly versatile, classy and empowering Boudoir Photography is!

The Competition…

To demonstrate this from a photography point of view, I decided to run a competition locally in Surrey to all women that wanted the opportunity of getting a Complimentary Boudoir Photoshoot. I explained that the series would be taking people through the ages and eras of Boudoir, transforming them from their day to day look into a throw back from some of the key eras in Boudoir. All they had to do to be in with a chance was to tell me which era they would like to be transformed into and why, and to send me up to 3 photographs of themselves. I was overwhelmed with the response and painstakingly looked through all of the images and read all of the stories from entrants. I made my selection based on their answers, then once I had a short list of those, I selected based on their photographs as to how I could help transform them.

I arranged three separate shoot dates and there would be two Era’s covered each day. With an amazing team of Hair and Make Up artists, a fabulous venue at Hotel de Vie in Farnham, and loads of wonderful props and garments from fabulous local suppliers, the shoot came together! The History of Boudoir… 1950’s Classic Pin Up

This is my absolute favourite era of Boudoir.

Boudoir images of this time were both playful and seductive and Pin-Up girls were every ladies inspiration. They were glamorous, powerful, desired and just pure sexy! Betty Grable was one of the most well known Pin-Up girls of that era along with Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, Veronica Lake and Ava Gardner. These pin-up girls wore stockings, corsets, men’s ties and hats and were among the first to use various props in their unique “portraits.” Pin up models are mostly pictured using boudoir photography to best illustrate their figures and beauty in a glamorous and stylish way.

At one point or another most celebrities need glamour shots using this kind of photography to illustrate their beauty and show off their best features. The famous actress Marilyn Monroe had thousands of photos taken using this style. Boudoir photos are very beautiful and highly attractive to the eye. Many would be surprised to find that boudoir photography existed well before the well-known ’40s and ’50s pin-up craze. In fact, it’s one of the oldest genres of photography. Women originally used this type of professional photography to advertise their businesses on cards and signs. However, the French term “boudoir” for intimate photography wasn’t in use until the last few decades. Boudoir began as a term to describe “a women’s private bedroom,” hence its mysterious and intimate feel today. There are currently thousands of photographers waiting for clients to seek their services. Boudoir has become more prominent now than ever. In modern times, you may also hear it called, “intimate photography.”

Our Competition Winner – the Fabulous Cat…

When Cat entered our competition she caught my eye, because she told me that although she’s always had an issue with her weight, and been on a diet most of her life, she has now taken the first steps to learn to love her body by joining ‘the Body Positive Movement’, which teaches people how to overcome conflicts with their bodies so they can lead happier, more productive lives. Cat was hoping that if she won our competition she could get herself a step closer! Plus I thought that her look would suit a 50’s Pin Up style perfectly, and I was right!

Cat said “All my life I have struggled with my weight, and so in turn my confidence. I entered the competition not thinking that I would win, but was influenced by the body positivity movement on social media at the moment. I did this for myself to prove that sexy was within my reach and not something only for slim! Coming in to the day I was so nervous! I have never done anything like this before, but as the hair and makeup took place I was starting to settle. As the shoot went on my confidence rose and I had no problem with any of the outfits. I honest would recommend this experience to anyone as a present to yourself or a loved one. I love my images and they are a perfect reminder of how fierce I am on a bad day”.

“During your shoot just remember to go with it and have fun! No one but you and ginny know what is taking place in that room and no one has to see the images but you. I have no regrets”!
